| Church S.Pietro Corsena (Bagni di Lucca) | The “Villa of Corsena”, appears for the first time in a 983 Longobard document, from which can be assumed, the existence of a church between the X and the XI century. hypothesis confirmed partly from an examination of the structure and also from a document dated 1165 “Actum Corsena Intus Parsonage Eccelesie S.Pietri De Suprascripto Place Corsena.” In the period of the Longobards, the Parish church belonged to the “Plebes de Controni”(“Fines” denominated Longobardo “Contronenses”), together with other 8 churches, in a 1260 document, it results to have an income of 170 Liras Pisane, inferior only in the Parish to which depended, already showing to be a prosperous Parish. May 5th 1406, after a long controversy with the Parish priest of Controni, resolved by the bishop Nicolao, the baptismal font was granted. During the centuries, the three aisled Parish church, supported by 8 columns has, been altered various times, only the side of the right aisle maintains almost unchanged its structure (X-XI century.). The façade of double eaves, was realized after an amplification in the XIV century, of its right part a portico was incorporated, for the refuge of the pilgrims, which during the restoration of the ‘900 will then be closed (the arcs of the portico are still well visible). The bell tower, detached from the Parish church was erect at the end of the XVII century in place of an ancient bell tower, existing on the left side of the façade, where the parsonage now rises, Inside, besides the Baptismal font, a canvas of the Florentine 1629 Gaspare Mannucci , the grave of the standard-bearer Martino della Lena XVI century and the Tabernacle should be brought to notice. |
